Furnace goes out, Part Deux

Getting a late start this morning, partly because I was up until 2 am with the furnace repair man last night, and it was not a social visit. This is the second time the furnace has gone out this winter, both times the same thing has happened. We appear to have some problem in the fuel supply line where it gets air bubbles in it, which causes the fuel pump to not work, which, in turn caused no fire in the burner, and thus no heat in the house.

It seems that there are many placed for air to leak into a fuel line, basically all of the fittings between the tank and the fuel pump are to be suspect. It seems that if air is leaking in, then fuel should be leaking out, so most often this problem is accompanied by a puddle of fuel oil on the floor. This time, there was no such puddle, however. We did have the furnace serviced last fall, and as a part of that, the fuel filter was replaced. It is possible that when the filter was replaced, conceded the repair man, that it was installed incorrectly, or that it has a bad gasket. So he replaced the fuel filter and gasket and tightened all of the fittings on the fuel supply line. Then he dusted it with some white powder with will show any oil leaks, in case it happens again.

Of course, this time I watched what he did. Our oil burner uses a Suntec A2VA 7116 fuel pump. A little bit of time with Google and I found the Suntec pump web site, complete with a technical description and a field service manual for my pump. I wonder what we did before Google? Anyway, next time I will be able to restore heat myself and call the service man in the morning.
