Meet the newest member of the family in its brand new, just removed from the box, first photo; a Toro Model 20072 6.5 horse power, 22 inch self propelled Recycler lawn mower:

Toro model 20072 22 inch lawn mower

I finally got tired of messing around trying to fix an old Cub Cadet lawn tractor or trying to find something else. Yesterday afternoon I broke down and purchased the mower at, ahem, The Home Depot. It was on sale and all. I got it home and figured that I had an assembly project on my hands, but it was all put together right out of the box. I just needed to add oil, which was conveniently provided, unfold the handle and set the wheel height.

The good, the bad, and the Ugly:

Good

  • It started on the first pull.
  • It has lots of power. Even in tall thick grass, the mower kept on going.
  • You can vary the walking speed using the self propelled engaging lever. All the way in is a fast walk, letting the handle part way out slows the machine down
  • Using the hose port, you can clean the mower deck after every mow. It works pretty well

Bad

  • The handle has this funny angle thing at the top, I noticed after an hour or so my wrists were a little sore from gripping the both levers
  • It is a little louder than the other mower

Ugly

  • Nothing really ugly, its a lawn mower after all.

All and all, a good value for the price (about $271.00 on sale) This mower has much more power than the old Craftsman mower. The engine on that machine really was shot.

    That is one sweet lawnmower.

Thanks, Jay. After I used it yesterday it is a little less shiny so I don’t think I could return it like a dress at the end of the summer.

Well, maybe you can keep this one. I finally got my lawn mowed this afternoon…and wrote about it, of course.

I have two blisters now, from that damn bottom lever. Oh well.

    Started right up, first pull.

    Bye, TWIN!!!

  • Paul says:

    Mike, not a drop.

I’ve got one right now with a crack in the lower part of the engine and it leaks oil under the deck.

I viewed this as an upgrade from my old Craftsman. With a small corner lot I’ve used it maybe 24 times in two years and today the self propelled mechanism just stopped working. Now I’m told this is common with a Toro and it will cost me over $100 to fix. Anybody else delt with this? I’m two months out of warranty…of course…but with I just haven’t used it all that much…takes like an hour to an hour and a half to mow my whole yard front and back. Starts great and had been running well but this just let all the air out of the Toro balloon.

I agree regarding this mower. It’s a good model and it has a lot of power. I have a neighbor who owns one and it seems to do the trick.

@Ken~ The self propelled part is actually a small transmission that needs to be replaced. I just had mine done yesterday and $100.00 is a fair price considering the part alone costs about $75.00. Ive have mine for about 4 years now, and this is the only problem other that an occasional clogging of the air filter (which is owner error)! Good luck with your mower.
