Raised vegetable garden beds done

I haven’t posted any updates on this.  Basically, the vegetable garden work is done.  We have had a very very cool spring around here, so things are not growing as fast as they normally do.  This is the new look:

Basically the fence is 20 x 20 feet, so the enclosed area is 400 square feet.  Each bed is 4 feet by 16 feet, so the total growing area is 192 square feet, less than half of the enclosed area.  I understand that this is about typical for any garden.  The fence is absolutely necessary.  Without it, anything that is growing in the garden would be cleaned out in one night by the deer.

The first bed is planted with strawberries, carrots, swiss chard, and tomatoes.

The middle bed has zucchini, cucumbers, and pole beens, the third bed has yet to be planted

  • I must say your fence is rather attractive for a vegetable garden!

  • Paul,

NICE garden! I’m very jealous. We were going to put one in this year until I had my health issue. That fence would work great to keep the deer away. Maybe next summer!

  • Thanks Jennifer, lots of people have commented on this fence. Basically, it cost me nothing except the sweat to install it. The posts and cross members are all black locust, which I seemingly have an endless supply of. The wire fence came from a friend of mine who didn’t need it any more.

Todd, I have always enjoyed fresh vegetables from the garden. There is nothing like walking out and picking a nice ripe tomato off of the vine and putting it in a sandwich or something. Plus, I know the tomatoes that grow in my garden don’t have Salmonella which these days, seems to be an important detail.
