Strawberries!

We’ve been getting about one of these per day:

fresh picked strawberries from the garden

fresh picked strawberries from the garden

I’d estimate that to be 3-4 pints of berries.  We also loose about 2-3% to chipmunks, slugs, mold, etc.  I throw those over the fence into the grass so the birds can eat them.   We’ll be making some strawberry preserves and likely giving some away.  I’d say the transplanting project last year has worked well.

God, that looks so good. How long does it take to grow a patch of strawberries?

  • Paul says:

We transplanted these plants last year and got very few berries.  I would say it takes one year to get a good producing strawberry patch.

That’s just gorgeous!  I love berries.  I think the squirrels would get them ALL around here, though.  They get all of our apples!

Paul – strawberries are delicious!  I wish I was a bit closer so I could get more to make jam – there is nothing like homemade jam.  How long do you expect to be picking them?

  • Paul says:

They are good strawberries, I had some on my cereal this morning.  I don’t know, they seem to be plentiful right now, perhaps another week to ten days…  I’ll get you some more, we have plenty.

They look delicious! Home grown fruit and vegetables always taste great. Be sure to let me know if you have any trouble eating them all :)

Most of those strawberries are not ripe! They should be deep red, like rubies, with no white parts. Next year, you ought to let them be a little longer and fight the temptation to pick early. You’ll lose more to bugs and birds but it will be worth it.

BC: I agree with you that I should have left them out there a little while longer, however, we got a lot of rain this year. That in turn brought out the slugs, which were feasting on rip berries. I picked this a little early so we would have some too.
